Proposed bill repeals red light camera law - NBC2 News

COLLIER COUNTY: Florida Senate Bill 672 to repeal laws allowing red light cameras just passed the Transportation Committee in a 4-2 vote. Some county leaders say the cameras improve safety, while others say the cameras are an invasion of privacy.

For two years, twelve cameras have kept an electronic eye on 8 Collier County intersections.

"It seemed that was the only way to protect our community was with red light cameras," said Collier County Commissioner Donna Fiala.

Fiala has been a supporter of Collier's red light camera program since it started in April of 2009.

"It seems to be working just fine we don't get any complaints from anybody it seems to be pretty fair," said Fiala.

Not everyone agrees. Florida Senate Bill 672 passed Tuesday in the Transportation Committee. It would eliminate red light cameras in Florida.

Collier County Commissioner Georgia Hiller says the cameras violate privacy.

"It's a slippery slope if you start with red light cameras what's the next set of cameras you're going to place to justify some safety issue?" said Hiller.

It's about more than just public safety. With each click of the camera, there's money to be made.

Of the $158 fine, $75 goes to Collier County, the other $83 goes to the Department of Revenue. The DOR then puts $70 in the General Fund, $10 in the Department of Health Administrative Trust Fund and $3 in the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Trust Fund.

Between July 2010 and February 2011, the DOR received $8,452,598 from fines related to red light cameras from 32 jurisdictions, including Collier County.

There's no word on when lawmakers could move forward with the bill.
