UFO Moviez eyes 100 more cinemas in Gujarat by next fiscal - Business Standard

UFO Moviez eyes 100 more cinemas in Gujarat by next fiscalVinay Umarji / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad?December 21, 2011, 0:32 IST

Having already ramped up its digital cinema network to 195 theatres in Gujarat by December 2011, UFO Moviez India Ltd, is planning to add another 100 cinemas to its kitty in the state by next fiscal.

One of the world's largest satellite delivered digital cinema network founded by the Valuable Group, UFO Moviez India Ltd. is eyeing a 50 per cent share in the Gujarat market, with the current share being 40 per cent. "Three years ago, Gujarati films used to open in 25 to 30 centers with 25 to 30 analogue prints. Now, due to UFO’s satellite-based solutions, they open in the same number of centers with 5-7 prints resulting in substantial cost savings to the distributor/producer. Such has been the penetration in the state, that out of total 500 cinemas, we have already covered 195 cinemas. By next fiscal, we plan to add another 100 cinemas to our digital network in Gujarat," said Pankaj Jaysinh, CEO, UFO Moviez India Ltd.

Apart from digital network, a back-end software and infrastructure for IMPACT ? UFO's online computerised ticketing platform for better management and transparency, has been developed and deployed in more than 200 screens across Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The number of Gujarati films released on the UFO digital network currently stands at 60 plus while the number of UFO digital theatres playing Gujarati films is approximately 100 as of December 2011. What's more, due to the UFO digital theatre network, Gujarati films are now being exhibited outside Gujarat in a limited fashion at places like the Eastern circuit (Roxy Talkies) and Mysore (Movie Land ? Bangalore). According to Jaysinh, multiple language films (in Tamil, Malayalam, Bhojpuri, Sindhi, Marathi and Telugu, for example) are also releasing in Gujarat, providing entertainment to the diaspora in the state. Currently, UFO has a base of 2,783 digital screens (147 3D Screens), spread in 1300 cities in 28 states of India. Out of these, around 350 screens are in multiplexes (which constitutes over 30 per cent of the multiplex population in the country) and the balance are single screen theatres. So far, UFO has released more than 4600 films in 29 languages and has conducted over 8.9 million shows till date.

UFO has committed an investment of Rs 200 crore to fuel the growth and expansion plans in India of associate company Scrabble Entertainment (Pvt) Limited (in which UFO Moviez has recently acquired a controlling stake), which offers high end technology for screening Hollywood films in multiplexes. The international roll out plans of Scrabble Entertainment will entail a capex of US$ 150 million (Rs 800 crore approx.) to be funded by way of international debt and further equity infusion by UFO Moviez.

Glastonbury 'UFO calls hotspot' - The Press Association

Glastonbury 'UFO calls hotspot'(UKPA) ? 6 days ago?

It is not only the celebrities that visit Glastonbury who have been described as out of this world as it emerged the town is believed to be a UFO hotspot.

Official figures show that in the last five years 27 calls were made to police detailing alien events in Somerset, including sightings near Glastonbury and Street.

Avon and Somerset Police released the figures to the Central Somerset Gazette following a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

The calls include general sightings of UFOs, aliens and "alien possession", while one caller reported a UFO in their front room which had inspired their dog to draw pictures on the window.

Others claimed there were saints looking in through their windows, or wanted to pass messages on from our intergalactic neighbours, including that the world needs to stop using nuclear weapons on humans.

In February 2007 one caller rang police to say aliens had taken over their body. This was followed up in July when another caller believed they saw an alien across the road.

In 2008 two callers reported being taken over by aliens and a possible alien assault. In the same year a UFO was seen circling the Tor and the the town.

Avon and Somerset Police said their communications department deals with around 180,000 emergency calls and 375,000 non-emergency calls. They also suggested some of these calls were likely to be a hoax but added they do highlight the work their call handlers are faced with.

Chief Inspector Kevan Rowlands told the paper: "Our call-handlers never know what the next call will involve and are trained to deal with a wide variety of incidents in a calm and professional manner. Sadly, there are a number of people who think it is amusing to ring the emergency services and make a hoax call.

"We are also very aware that some of the calls that may seem bizarre mask an underlying need from the caller. Our staff are trained to deal with this sensitively and to provide any necessary support."

Was UFO towed down Kansas street? The truth is out there - msnbc.com

A few days ago, a "UFO" was spotted cruising down a main street in Cowley County, Kansas. It wasn't in the skies, but instead being hauled on a flatbed truck driving down the middle of US Highway 77.

From at least one angle, the strange-shape aircraft resembled a saucer, and was covered by what appeared to be an industrial-strength tarp (or perhaps a badly malfunctioning cloaking device).

The vehicle, at about 30 feet across, was so big that local law enforcement had to remove roadside signs to allow safe passage ? as well as some measure of security. Many locals suspected (or at least joked) that that it might have been a UFO or some top-secret aircraft. Local sheriff Don Read said he was not allowed to divulge much about the mysterious craft, though he did let slip the detail that it was not recovered at a crash site, but rather had been manufactured by the aerospace company Northrop Grumman.

Yet many people wondered why, if it was a known craft (even a secretive one), wouldn't the company simply fly the craft to its destination. Perhaps it needed repair or maintenance; but if so, wouldn't it be easier to bring the mechanics and parts to the aircraft, instead of taking it to the nation's highways? Speculation ran rampant, fueled by YouTube videos and news reports about the strange sight. [ Hunter Captures UFO in Nevada ]

Finally, a man named Brooks McKinney stepped forward to pierce the veil of mystery and conspiracy. McKinney, senior manager of public relations at Northrop Grumman, told Life's Little Mysteries that the suspected UFO was in fact an X-47B, an unmanned combat drone designed to operate from aircraft carriers.

The X-47B has an impressive wingspan of 62 feet (just over 30 feet with wings folded); a length of nearly 40 feet; and stands about 10 feet high on three wheels. The X-47B in the video was headed to a Naval air station in Maryland.

"We built two for the Navy, they were being tested at Edwards Air Force Base [in California] since March," McKinney said. "One is on its way to Maryland, and the other will remain in California." He took the UFO speculation in good humor, though, and understood the curiosity: "Clearly people are interested in what's going through town. It's unusual to see a shrink-wrapped aircraft, especially one with that shape."

The reason it wasn't simply flown across the country is deceptively simple: "It's difficult to fly an unmanned drone through commercial airspace," McKinney explained. Piloted aircraft are one thing, but long trips for large aircraft without a human pilot on board are frowned upon for both aviation security reasons and practical concerns.

On the other hand, perhaps the X-47B is just a convenient cover story, and it really is a captured flying saucer. We'll leave it to you to decide.

UFO claim quashed - The West Australian

A metal sphere that crashed into a remote area of Namibia and believed to be a UFO has been identified as a hydrazine tank.

Locals heard a loud explosion when the object crashed into earth and the impact left a 13ft wide crater.

The mysterious object, which crashed in the country in November, caused a national security alert and led to NASA being called in to identify the item.

However, it has now been identified as a hydrazine tank from a rocket, which would have been used in a satellite launch.

'For anyone wondering what it actually is, it's likely a 39-litre hydrazine bladder tank," Gawker reported on its website.

"They're used on unmanned rockets for satellite launches, which would explain why they're falling down in such a specific geographic footprint."

The purpose was to show how technology can fool anyone into thinking they are seeing a real UFO.Share
Winsted- According to Dantonio, he suggested to National Geographic while doing a job for them that he could "create a functional UFO that we can actually fly." He had had previous experience in building working models used for creating special effects for the History Channel and Learning Channel. The "UFO" he built was a 4-foot circumference and x-shaped device with a motorized propeller at each end of it and several big circles of lights beyond the propellers. According to Dantonio, the idea was to "try and build a vehicle that would be big enough to be seen from a great distance, but small enough such that I wouldn't need exorbitant power requirements to get it up into the air."The quadcopter was flown from a big field behind a mall in Winsted, Conn. full of shoppers. He did three separate nine-minute flights. The craft was flown vertically up and then round before it was dropped down to a lower altitude and the lights turned off. The craft was then flown up 800 feet into the air very fast and lights turned on again. From the perspective of the unwary crowd at the nearby mall the last maneuver seemed like the craft has suddenly vanished in thin air and reappeared at another spot. The quadcopter looked like a glowing blue-green flying saucer moving up and down and back and forth in the manner UFO eyewitness accounts often describe. The National Geographic filmed the reaction of the crowd. Most shoppers stopped in their tracks and starred with dropped jaws at the sight of the "UFO." Dantonio thinks there is need for public education on how to distinguish UFO hoaxes contrived by existing technology from sightings that may be genuine. Dantonio said, "We wanted to hit that UFO myth and show how it can be accomplished with technology." He thinks his quadcopter illustrates the salient features of hoaxes and concludes: "The more people are educated, that's the way we're going to find a real UFO someday."But a critic of the demonstration on Educating Humanity website named Richard, has criticized National Geographic's attempt at "educating people" about UFOs as weak. Richard says: "...this is weak attempt to explain the UFO phenomena, I am posting it just to let you know it is on the way! Virtually everyone knows that these hoaxes are out there and with the advent of CGI it is now more prevalent than ever before but it certainly does not explain many sightings have deemed to be real or the classic UFO cases."Richard may be right in saying that the demonstration is too limited in scope to cover the wide variations in reported UFO sightings, but he fails, however, to buttress his argument by giving examples of sightings "deemed to be real or the classic UFO cases."

The "UFO's Eve" was one of the Soyuz Rocket Debris - San Francisco Luxury News

Today’s news from France …

There was no more UFOs than Santa Claus in the European skies, last Saturday. This is the Royal Observatory of Belgium, which ended the suspense surrounding the appearance of a luminous trail in the air on Christmas Eve. “The ball that was observed on December 24 over Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany, was the start of the last stage of the Soyuz launcher that comes to transport, among others, the astronaut Andre Kuipers to the ISS, International Space Station, “said the observatory.

unexpected appearance at the very least will have had the gift to speak. The Operations Centre of UFOs in Mannheim in the south-west Germany, has been inundated with phone calls. Internet also allowed diffusion many videos of what some experts first considered as being a meteorite.

UFO Hoax In Connecticut Offers Lesson In How To Report 'Alien' Visitations - Huffington Post

The quiet of a rural strip mall in Connecticut is suddenly interrupted by the appearance in the sky of a glowing blue-green disk. Shoppers stop in their tracks, staring at the unexplained craft moving up and down, back and forth.

But it's all a hoax, a very clever ruse concocted by Marc Dantonio, the chief photo and video analyst for the Mutual UFO Network.

And he did it for a very specific reason for a National Geographic Channel special, called "The Truth Behind: UFOs," airing this month.

"They wanted me to do some image analysis, and when they said they were looking for some dramatic videos to kick it up a notch, I suggested to them that I could create a functional UFO that we can actually fly," Dantonio told The Huffington Post.

Dantonio knows a thing or two about building sophisticated working models. His Connecticut-based company, FX Models, creates special effects for the History Channel and the Learning Channel, and has contracts with the U.S. Navy, Congress and the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.

So Dantonio set up his UFO hoax at a mall in Winsted, Conn. To do it just right for the National Geographic cameras, he launched three separate nine-minute flights.

"They used several main cameras -- one to gauge crowd reaction -- but they wanted to film it in ways that didn't look obtrusive," he said.

"Our point was to illustrate that technology can cause confusion, and we succeeded. And after we flew it, we totally exposed the technology so people could see exactly what we did," said Dantonio.

What he and his company created was a "quadcopter" with a 4-foot circumference and an X-shaped configuration that had motorized propellers at each end of the X (pictured at right). Several inches beyond the propellers was a big circle of lights.

"My mission was to try and build a vehicle that would be big enough to be seen from a great distance, but small enough such that I wouldn't need exorbitant power requirements to get it up into the air," Dantonio explained.

"We flew it out from a big field behind the mall and then shot it vertically up and maneuvered it around, [and then] dropped it down to a lower altitude and shut off the lights on it. Then we rocketed the thing up in the air about 800 feet and turned the lights back on."

Numerous people said it looked like it vanished from one spot and reappeared in another -- a typical UFO eyewitness account.

"We wanted to hit that UFO myth and show how it can be accomplished with technology," Dantonio added.

WATCH Marc Dantonio create and fly his UFO hoax:

The overall point of this little UFO charade was to help people report UFOs in a way that better separates the truly unknown aerial objects from those that are easily explained.

"With the number of people who have recorded UFOs with their cellphones, there's a much higher likelihood they're going to capture objects in the sky. But not all of these things are true unidentified flying objects," said Dantonio.

"My main tenet of doing this production was to show how there's existing technology that can fool you into thinking you're seeing a real UFO," he said. "The more people are educated, that's the way we're going to find a real UFO someday."

Cloud making UFO brings Russian city to standstill, video - Allnewsweb.com

Cloud making UFO brings?Russian city to standstill, videoA?cloud emitting UFO has brought an?entire Russian city?to a standstill, overshadowing Christmas and New Year celebrations and leaving residents?perplexed and?seeking answers?from local politicians (see video below). The event took place?yesterday in the southern city of Trekhgorny, located in the Chelyabinsk?region?near?Russia's border with?Khazakstan. Reports are filtering in?claiming that nervous community leaders have already?relayed messages?to?Moscow's Science Ministry asking for clarification as to the nature of the UFO witnessed and filmed. The event is significant in that Trekhgorny, created under Soviet rule, is a closed city and non-residents are forbidden entry unless in possession of a formal invitation from friends or family, approved by local authorities. Trekhgorny's status as a closed city is due to the fact that its main industry is the production of nuclear reactors. Consequently some are suggesting that it is possible that alien technology might be currently being reversed engineered in its midst. Ample research has been done on the topic of the high incidence of UFO and alien activity in the vicinity of nuclear reactors. Strong evidence suggests that aliens are extremely concerned with human plans to make use of nuclear energy in space. Numerous witnesses to UFOs have described these craft's cloud making capabilities. It has also been noted that the use of these "clouds" for the purpose of camouflage by visiting aliens is particularly common in instances where?the UFO is seen near military or nuclear facilities. Some?commentators are suggesting that with this very public showing, aliens are sending a very clear message to Moscow regarding their concerns. Alien activity in Russia reached a peak in 2011. Strong evidence suggests that Russia is in communion with a number of alien races and although UFO bases exist in Siberia, relations between Russia and these visitors are shaky.?

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Trailer Hits iTunes [VIDEO]

Warner Bros. released the first full-length trailer for next summer’s The Dark Knight Rises exclusively on iTunes.

The film, which will be out next summer, has already been part of an extensive digital campaign. In July, the studio released the first teaser for the film via Facebook.

The studio has continued to use the social network to show off movie posters for the film and to engage with fans with upcoming news.

The IMAX version of Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol includes the eight-minute prologue to the film. That prologue was part of a bigger digital campaign for Mission: Impossible and helped draw big healthy business over the weekend.

The Dark Knight Rises is the final film in Christopher Nolans’s Batman trilogy. The second film, The Dark Knight, had an expansive digital and viral campaign. We can only hope Warner Bros. follows suit for the final chapter.

The first full-length trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, which is available exclusively on iTunes, has predictably found its way to YouTube.

While we fully expect YouTube to remove the most popular uploaded copies of the trailer, here it is for those with an aversion to QuickTime:

The Biggest Web Outages of 2011

It’s been a notable year for Web outages. From Netflix going down at extremely inopportune times, to Amazon Web Services’ multi-day breakdown in the spring, Internet services are still seemingly as unreliable as ever. SmartBear Software just published its list of the top Web Outages of 2011, and there are some memorable ones on there. It should be noted, though, that only outages that weren’t caused by a third party made the list ? hacks like the one that took out Sony’s PlayStation Network weren’t included.

Good news for the Net in general, though: SmartBear reports that the number of significant outages is actually lower than in 2010. No need to go ballistic.

Flirting With Danger: More Drivers Texting on the Road Than Ever

Despite various state law bans and nationwide awareness campaigns to prevent texting from behind the wheel, the amount of people texting while driving is actually on the rise, a new study suggests.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the percentage of drivers who sent texts and use mobile devices while on the road has jumped from 0.6% in 2009 to 0.9% to 2010.

The news comes as automakers and legislators try to bring more awareness to the dangers of distracted driving. In fact, the National Transportation Safety Board is working to make cellphone use from talking hands-free with a headset to texting illegal in all 50 U.S. states. Although each state can make its own laws on the issue, the recommendation from NTSB is expected to hold a lot of weight.

The latest findings from the NHTSA study indicate that 3,000 people were killed in car accidents in 2010 due to distracted drivers. Although the study classified distractions as talking and changing the radio to using a mobile device, it noted that reading or writing texts increases the chances of an accident by 2,300%.

The NHTSA also said that drivers who use mobile devices in any capacity are four times more likely to have an accident and injure themselves or others. Car accidents are the leading cause of death for teens in the U.S., and 16% of young drivers involved in fatal accidents were driving distracted.

“Using a cell phone while driving is the equivalent of having a blood alcohol concentration level of .08%, the legal limit in most states,” the NHTSA said in a statement. “Using a cell phone can reduce the brain activity associated with driving by 37%.”

In July, a study from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) highlighted the impact that cellphones and other gadgets can have on car crashes and found that as many as 25% of U.S. car crashes are associated with drivers distracted by tech devices.

Should using technology from behind the wheel be banned in all states? Is there a safe way to use tech on the road? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

MTV’s ‘Power of 12′ Campaign Creates Fantasy Political Election Game

MTV just unleashed Power of 12, a campaign designed to get 18- to 29-year-olds fired up about the 2012 U.S. elections.

Unlike previous campaigns ? dubbed “Choose or Lose” since 1992 ? the renamed initiative features a fantasy football-like gaming element in addition to MTV‘s traditional campaign documentaries, website and political news coverage.

“Fantasy Election ’12” players will draft candidates competing for the presidency, U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and then score points depending on how well or badly the politicians conduct themselves.

“In the way that fantasy football awards points when your players score touchdowns and deducts points when they throw interceptions, ‘Fantasy Election ’12′ will reward candidates for exhibiting the behaviors voters deserve, and penalize politicians for behaviors that hurt our democracy,” MTV said in an announcement.

Players also will earn points for discussing issues, registering to vote and checking in to debates and town halls. The game launches next fall, closer to the time the general election starts.

Before then, however, MTV will try to appeal to the “Millennials” with other Power of 12 elements. Its first-person documentary, Our Voice, premieres Dec. 20 on TV and will be available online at the campaign’s homebase, PowerOf12.org. The documentary follows 25-year-old Andrew Jenks, who along with peers are traveling across the U.S. to asks questions to candidates.

Another Power of 12 documentary, When I was 22, will tell the story of presidential candidates when they were 22. It premieres in early 2012.

Aside from housing the documentaries after they premiere, PowerOf12.org will offer election news, information about candidates and issues, a voter-registration tool and polling information.

“Through their sheer size, Millennials [45 million 18-29 year olds will be eligible to vote] have the power to be a deciding factor in the 2012 elections and help set the country’s direction,” says MTV President Stephen Friedman. “Our goal for the Power of 12 is to encourage candidates to tap into the power of the largest generation in history and respond to their concerns.”

Do you think MTV is smart to excite potential voters with social gaming? Sound off in the comments.

NYC Startup Scene Celebrated in 2012 Calendar [PHOTOS]

Dear Fellow Techies and Friends,

It's our sincere pleasure to bring you the first annual Only In The Alley calendar!

The idea for this project started as a joke we came up with during the Summit Series, a conference for young entrepreneurs that was held on a cruise ship (tough life, we know). Cliff was drinking a beer in the pool on top of a baby duck float and Chris was counting the calories in his diet soda. The libations sparked a thought: Wouldn't it be hilarious to get a bunch of NYC-based tech entrepreneurs together to have them pose for a sexy FDNY-meets-Zoolander style calendar?

Alas, after we came back to reality, we realized it might be just a tad difficult to get NYC tech's best and brightest to shed their layers, literally, for our poolside vision. Well, with this picture being the only exception. (We like to think we took one for the team. You’re welcome.)

Sexy pics aside, we knew we were on to something. The New York tech community traditionally takes a backseat to Silicon Valley, at least in the press. Yes, the Valley may have some heavy hitters, but the Alley's got its fair share, too, and the startup community here is growing faster than the valuations of social media companies. We thought it was time to give our amazing cohorts in the Big Apple a little recognition, and during a rooftop brainstorming session in NYC, a G-rated version of our calendar was born.

We had a few simple criteria for the featured entrepreneurs. Obviously, their companies had to be NYC-based. We also wanted a diverse range of companies at various stages of growth. And we certainly fulfilled our objectives. Companies like Hotlist and Classtivity find themselves in the process of raising a round of financing; Birchbox, LearnVest, and others are venture capital backed; Plum Benefits has been successfully acquired; and SNAP Interactive is publicly traded (STVI). But the single most important factor we considered was how the entrepreneurs passionately spoke to the unique opportunities and experiences that were only available to them here in NYC.

The resulting list is a phenomenal sample of NYC's startup companies and their founders, which makes us proud to be part of this smart, unique, and incredibly supportive community.

So bring it on, Silicon Valley. These companies and their experiences are Only In The Alley!

Have a great year and enjoy the calendar!

- Cliff Lerner and Chris Mirabile

Seoul Statue Becomes Focal Point of Dispute With Japan

Seoul Statue Becomes Focal Point of Dispute With Japan ??
?????Monday 19th December, 2011??Source: International Herald Tribune

SEOUL, South Korea - The unsmiling teenage girl in traditional Korean dress sits in a chair, her feet bare, her hands on her lap, her eyes fixed on the Japanese Embassy across a narrow street in central Seoul.
Within a day, the life-size bronze statue had become the focal point of a simmering diplomatic dispute as President Lee Myung-bak prepared to visit Tokyo this weekend.

The statue, named the Peace Monument, was financed with citizens' donations and installed Wednesday, when five women in their 80s and 90s, who were among thousands forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese military during World War II, protested in front of the embassy, joined by their supporters.
Such protests have been held weekly for almost 20 years.
