Astronauts have prayed regularly in space, CNN blogger reports - Beliefnet.com (blog)

Prayer has been a part of space flight since the very first, reports CNN blogger Thom Patterson.

He cites a number of stories of prayers in space?? but does not mention the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, a devout Russian Orthodox Christian, who friends have reported was humiliated by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s claim that?Gagarin had looked around in space and saw no god. There is no record of Gagarin ever uttering the words or confirming the claim.?

Patterson also tells of Apollo 11 Col. Buzz Aldrin, saying?Aldrin was?the only person ever to receive communion on the moon. A Presbyterian,?Aldrin administered the sacrament himself while inside the lunar landing vehicle. Shortly afterward, Aldrin became the second human to set foot on the moon.

According to Christian author Charles Colson, fellow astronaut Neil Armstrong also participated in?that lunar?communion service.

Patterson then relates a rather irreverent prayer supposedly uttered by America’s first astronaut, Alan B. Shepherd, which Shepherd has denied.

And Patterson relates other Christian, Jewish and Muslim prayers uttered in space:

February 1962: “Godspeed, John Glenn,” says fellow astronaut Scott Carpenter as Glenn becomes the first American to orbit the Earth.

April 1970: President Nixon leads nation in prayer for the safe return of Apollo 13 crew members after their spacecraft is damaged en route to the moon.

February 2003: Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, who was killed with six others aboard the shuttle Columbia, brought with him a tiny microfiche Bible given to him by Israel’s president, according to the New York Times. He also copied the traditional Jewish blessing Shabbat Kiddush into his diary so he could recite it aboard the spacecraft and have the blessing broadcast to Earth, according to the Jerusalem Post.

August 2005: While in orbit, shuttle Discovery‘s Eileen Collins ? commanding the first mission after 2003′s Columbia disaster ? says a prayer in honor of Columbia‘s seven crewmembers killed during reentry. The prayer is adapted from a poem “For the Fallen,” by Laurence Binyon.

October 2007: Malaysian cosmonaut Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor ? a practicing Muslim ? prays regularly during his eleven-day stay aboard the International Space Station. Because the orbiting outpost goes through several “sunrises” daily, Islamic scholars must determine special rules regarding how to face Mecca and how many times to pray each day.

March 2011: Discovery pilot Col. Eric Boe leads astronauts in prayer before lifting off on Discovery‘s final mission. Boe told spacelaunch.com: “We had a huddle as a team, we just said a quick prayer and just said looking forward to mission and let us do well. It was a good way to get ready for the mission and to give us some focus before we get on the rocket to go.”

Little League Reinstates Blogger's Son - Patch.com

The Commack North Little League has reinstated a teen after banning him last week because his mother wrote a blog post criticizing the organization, the league has confirmed.

"I received an email from Mike Campione, the president of the CNLL today. He apologized to me and reinstated my son, inviting him to come back to the league next year if he wants to play," Loren Boiarsky told readers of Commack Patch.

Boiarsky's initial blog post on Patch,?Calling a Foul on Commack North Little League, started a flurry of comments on the site, many from league board members defending league practices.

It eventually led to Campione calling up the blogger and?banning her son from the league, citing violation of the league's policy on spreading negativity about the league. No written terms, however, forbidding parents from criticizing the league ever surfaced, but Campione on Friday released a copy of the policy that was read to parents at a March 24 board meeting.

League board member Michael Ende confirmed the boy's reinstatement.

"Ms. Boiarsky’s son was reinstated and will be permitted to register to participate in little league," he said in an email.

After news broke that the league had banned the boy, another storm of comments followed, many showing their support for the teen and his mother and directing their own criticisms toward the league.

The debate spurred Campione to jump in and ask for tempers to settle down.

"This matter has escalated to a level beyond anyone’s imagination and, for the sake of our community, this has to stop now," he wrote.

Campione added that the league plans to schedule a public meeting for league parents and league organizers.

Not date or venue for that meeting has been set.

Corporate Blogging: Build the Blog or The Blogger? - Business Insider

Lisa Barone is co-founder and chief branding officer of Outspoken Media, Inc

You’ve decided to start a corporate blog. Fantastic. There are some questions you’re going to have to answer.

When you begin down the corporate blogging road, there are a few things you’ll have to quickly decide on. What kind of content will you publish? How will the blog help you attract leads? What in the world are you going to blog about all the time? But one the most important questions to ask is who will be doing the blogging ? will it be a team (multi-author) or a specific person (single-author)?

What strategy will be most valuable to the business?

Ultimately, the type of blog you create will depend on what you’re trying to accomplish. However, here are some PROs and CONs to consider when deciding whether your corporate blogging strategy will build the blog or the blogger.

Single-Author Blogs PROs

Personal connection: The power of the single-author blog comes from the strong personal connection the author is able to create with readers. When it’s a single voice people are hearing, they learn to trust it, to relate to it, and to recognize it. As the brand behind it, you benefit from that karma and from the star power that your blogger builds up. They become your public face. If you can position the person in the right way and they’re comfortable leading from that role, it can be a really powerful combination. Last month Ari Herzog asked do you read blogs or bloggers, which did a good job highlighting the power of these personal connections and how we start to recognize blogs by the people behind them.

Unified voice: Where many corporate blogs royally fall on their face is in their inability to develop a unified voice. A voice that speaks for the company, but also speaks to readers. When there’s a single author on the blog and that person has been handpicked for their voice, you start to develop a presence that is recognizable to your audience. This is what will keep them coming back and what brands your blog.

Total ownership: When there’s one person responsible for your blogs success, it helps keep them motivated and determined to make it a success. Because if the blog fails, then they failed. With multi-author blogs, it’s sometimes easy for to ignore that editorial calendar and start phoning in their efforts because no one feels responsible for the blog’s success.

CONs

Limited posting: When just one person at the wheel, it’s pretty impossible to think you’ll be able to keep up with the posting schedule of a multi-author blog. Blogging isn’t typically anyone’s sole responsibility, which means they’ll have to fit in with client projects, internal projects, and whatever else is on their plate. One person, two hands, limited time for blogging.

Limited expertise: It doesn’t matter how skilled that one person is ? they can’t possibly be an expert on everything. That means your blog is going to be limited in the number of topics that you can authoritatively cover.

Won’t get in Google News: If you want to be included in the News results, one of the big sticking points is that you have multiple authors on your team to help you earn the needed street cred. One author? You’re probably not going to accepted for inclusion. Depending on your blogging goals, this may or may not be something you’re concerned with.

Multi-Author Blogs PROs

Build a team of experts: With a team of bloggers dedicated to sharing their expertise, you’re able to cover a lot more ground and brand specific people as the go-to person for that topic. If it’s an Internet marketing blog, you can separate people cover your cover competencies (SEO, PPC, Social Media, Email Marketing, Link Building, etc). This approach helps the company to look more robust and shows off the true depth of your services, instead of just highlighting one area.

More people for readers to relate to: If your blogger is snarky and outspoken, a segment of your audience will dislike her and immediately declare her rude, arrogant and elitist. If your blogger is well-mannered and polite to everyone, a different segment of your audience will label him gutless and without opinion. With one person blogging, you can’t win. But by opening your blog to many authors, you can find different writing styles that will speak to different segments of your audience.

More hands on deck: More writers means your blog doesn’t go silent just because someone got sick, got married, went on vacation, or are simply swamped in client To Dos. Instead of panicking or finding someone new to blog that day, you can just insert another writer who your audience is already familiar with.

CONs

Work harder to create that personal touch: It’s my opinion that it’s more difficult to create as strong of a personal relationship with your audience with a multi-author blog than with a single-author. Multi-author blogs create a different vibe. It becomes more focused on the knowledge of the brand than the specific person. And while that’s not a bad thing (at all), it does cut out some of that personality and intimacy of forming a relationship with a single person. As a result, it may take longer for people to come to trust and feel connected to your blog. With so many voices, it’s hard to get to know any one of them intimately.

Finding good writers: Too many cooks in the kitchen have a tendency to spoil the meal, especially if some of those cools can barely boil water on their own. Finding competent bloggers ? people who can not only WRITE authoritatively but who can make people give a damn ? is a difficult task, especially in corporate blogging. You don’t need to do much more than read all the crappy, make-your-eyes-bleed blogs to understand that. More voices can sometimes lead to uneven quality if you don’t have multiple people on your team who know how to connect with people.

Weaker internal linking: You know when it’s really easy to reference or promote something that’s already been published on your blog or site? When you’re the person who wrote it. When you know that this piece of content actually exists. With many authors, sometimes you won’t know that there’s a post in your archives that perfectly explains what you’re trying to sum up. And that can lead to loss opportunities for exposure and/or ranking.

So which do you pick?

That’s for you to evaluate your resources, your goals, and the type of blog you want to create. However, I’m actually a pretty big fan of multi-author blogs because I think they give businesses the most bang for their buck in terms of investing in content production, branding, and ability to court leads. I think the success of last week’s Blogger Birthday Bash, which introduced everyone to the talent behind Outspoken Media, also served as a pretty good testament to that.

But what are your thoughts? Do you read blogs or bloggers?? Who do you prefer to read ? one person or a team of folks wearing the same jersey?

Horrible Bosses: Blogger movie review - Christian Science Monitor

We are now inhabiting the post-”Hangover” world, and in case you needed any proof that studios are looking to locate the success gene in the hit comedy’s DNA, I submit “Horrible Bosses” as evidence. It really shouldn’t surprise you; it’s a page straight from the television networks’ playbook. As soon as Fox premiered “American Idol,” every network wanted a singing competition. After ABC had a big hit with “Dancing with the Stars,” every network suddenly had a dancing show. We live in a culture of thinly veiled rip-offs that barely bother to disguise their ever-so-slight variations from the original success story.

The good news for Seth Gordon and the “Horrible Bosses” team is that, at least at this moment, I still find the formula amusing and funny. The next movie shamelessly pressed from the “Hangover” mold, however, will probably not be in my good graces, so at least they got the timing right on this one. But the fact that some movie other than the sequel has tried using a similar blueprint for high cash and laugh returns signals a foreboding era in comedy. (Then again, I said the same thing last summer about “Iron Man 2” being the first of many “The Dark Knight” rip-offs, and nothing seems to have materialized there.)

The film invites these comparisons by using what may be the most recognizable aspect of “The Hangover” for laughs ? the Wolfpack. From now on, any comedy that has a ragtag alliance of three thirtysomething guys will inevitably have to be measured against the ridiculously high standard set by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis. Unfair? Probably. Justified? Definitely.

However, it’s not just the presence of three funnymen that makes the parallel clear; it’s that there is so little separating the “Horrible Bosses” guys from the Wolfpack. Jason Sudeikis is Bradley Cooper’s tail-chasing pretty boy, although he cedes de facto leadership of the bunch to Jason Bateman, who plays Ed Helms’ level-headed idea man who happens to be the only person in his friend group with a brain located in his head. And no raunchy comedy is complete with out Zach Galfianakis’ quirky bearded buffoon, here played by fresh face Charlie Day, the chipmunk-sounding dimwit with a thing for “Angry Birds” and the Ting Tings.

“Horrible Bosses” also uses the high concept like “The Hangover” to stretch the boundaries of what we would normally consider plausible, changing the question from “What if three guys were so drunk that they forgot a whole night?” to “What if three guys were so fed up with their bosses that they decided to murder them?” The bosses are pretty bad, ranging from blackmailing sleazes (Kevin Spacey) to nymphomaniacs (Jennifer Aniston) and even potbellied balding coke fiends (Colin Farrell). In a quest for psychological satisfaction in the workplace that puts Johnny Paycheck to shame, their rage and frustration leads them to sketchy bars, a misleading criminal (Jamie Foxx), and measures so desperate that they hardly make sense ? unless, of course, you’re in an R-rated comedy.

But judging the film purely by its own merit, not against that of ‘The Hangover,” it’s decent fun and laughter with a few unexpected twists breaking the banality a tad. The situations, easily the film’s strongest aspect, are corny but still fairly funny. There aren’t any good quotables, and Bateman, Sudeikis, and Day don’t seem to feed off each other for humor quite as well as they should. In this Wolfpack, the sum is less than the total of its parts. It’s by no means the worst of the dirty comedies; on the other hand, it’s not among the best.

As for the sympathy for the down-and-out unemployed American worker that has been featured in post-recessionary cinema from “Up in the Air” to “Larry Crowne,” don’t expect to get any from “Horrible Bosses.” Despite the fact that millions of Americans would be happy to have a job, even if their boss is a psycho or a slavedriver, it kicks the bruised man while he’s down. The movie dangles a out-of-work Lehman Brothers worker like comedic bait for the audience, showing him as so desperate that he will perform lewd sexual acts on old high school pals in the bathroom. While I’m the first person to stand up for the rights of comedians to make appropriate satire (in other words, not Tracy Morgan’s recent hateful rant), this little bit just feels in poor taste. However, poor taste seems to be a specialty in R-rated comedy nowadays. ”Horrible Bosses” is definitely irreverent, but it’s a dish that tastes best to those who have ever had to work under Satan … or who happened to have not seen “The Hangover.” B-

Google unveils YouTube Cosmic Panda experiment; completely redesigns Blogger - Digit

Google started to refresh the look of its web properties when it introduced Google+, and the trend of unification by design has now caught up with YouTube and Blogger. As some believe, the trend could very well bring other changes, with Google possibly intending to rebrand properties like Picasa and Blogger to Google Photos and Google Blogs. It is obviously a rather major decision to make, but we do not wonder if we will see YouTube being rebranded as the now defunct Google Videos, at least, not for a long while. We do hope to see something like the What Do You Love site Google had unveiled, as bridge between all the Google islands on the web.

We've also seen minor cosmetic changes in properties like Calendar, Google Maps, Product Search, and more.?

YouTube Cosmic Panda

The YouTube team has unveiled a new experimental user interface they are calling Cosmic Panda, bringing the new dark UI look that the new Search interface, and Google+ are already following. Videos, playlists, and channels all have new layouts and features, and uploaders will be happy to note there will be new editing tools and channel page designs.?

Some Chrome only features have been introduces, such as a new seamless interface to navigate between videos, playlists, and channels. You can try it all out if you choose to participate in the Cosmic Panda TestTube Experiment, here. You can always go back to the old, white interface. YouTube is awaiting feedback before it fully incorporates the new ideas.

Blogger

The Blogger platform was rather completely redesigned with nary an announcement, hoping to stay fit against the WordPress, Tumblr and Posterous competition. The redesign incorporates several features already available on the Google Labs-like Blogger in Draft section, such as the improved text-editor and mobile blog support. The overall UI of orange and white has many of the same buttons and icons as we’ve seen in the new unified UI Google seems to be aiming at. Visit draft.blogger.com to check out the changes.

There are some brand new features as well, such Google Analytics available right on the dashboard, a new and improved post screen, and what looks like an Ad Sense Earnings tab that’s still ‘coming soon.’

NEW YORK ? On a recent Friday night, Bebe Zeva, a teenage fashion blogger, journalist and model based in Las Vegas, was dining at the restaurant Lodge with a group of 20-something contributors to the online magazine Thought Catalog.

"I like to concentrate on the cuteness of what I'm eating," Zeva said. She had switched from coconut and almond vegan ice cream to a skirt steak. In a black minidress, black stockings, a sheer black and navy metallic robe and a floppy black hat, with dozens of long silver and gold chains slung from her neck, she looked like a brunette Stevie Nicks in miniature.

"Don't leave the house unless you look like you're going to a funeral," was Zeva's style rule for the weekend, which she was spending in the company of Leigh Alexander, a video-gaming journalist. Zeva calls this style Cyber Goth.

When someone at the table asked Zeva her age (she recently turned 18), the novelist and poet Tao Lin said: "She looks a lot more like 12 to me. But she seems like a genius."

Zeva was in town for the premiere screening of "Bebe Zeva," a feature-length video produced by Lin and Megan Boyle, who are selling it through their website, mdmafilms.org. (It was also screened this spring in Houston.)

In January Zeva appeared in Seventeen magazine, dispensing style advice. Later she was named a judge at the WWD Magic trade show, which will be held in her hometown in August. On April 1, Elle's blog asked, "Is Bebe the new Tavi?" referring to Tavi Gevinson, the 15-year-old who became a New York Fashion Week staple after starting a blog at age 11 from her home in Illinois. Lin helped cast Zeva as Audrey, an ingenue, in a planned film adaptation of his novel "Shoplifting From American Apparel."

All of this has come naturally to Zeva, who discusses the contours of her "career" with an endearing nonchalance. She was born in 1993 in Miami Beach. "Bebe" was a nickname she earned when her sister, Rachel, wasn't able to pronounce her real name, which she does not reveal publicly. "Zeva" derives from a Hebrew word that means "she-wolf," and she adopted it as a screen name at her mother's insistence that she not use her real name upon joining MySpace. (While Zeva does not use her birth name publicly, she said she intends to legally change her name to Bebe Zeva in the near future.)

With her mother and sister she moved to Springfield, Mass., when she was 6 years old. They stayed for five years, then moved to St. Louis for a year before coming to Las Vegas, where she now lives in a high-rise condo on the Strip.

Zeva's evolving sense of chic sprang from a period of alienation she suffered during high school, where she found herself surrounded by peers she terms "lifers" ? those whose lives are defined by "God, softball and the suburbs."

"I wore flared jeans and tight-fitting crewneck T-shirts from the likes of Hollister and Abercrombie up until my second semester of freshman year," Zeva wrote in an email after the night at Lodge, "when I made the conscious decision to pursue the hipster lifestyle."

It was around this time, Zeva recalled, that she went through a period of "relentlessly" Googling the word "hipster." On the Web, she discovered the party photographer Mark, the Cobra Snake, and the blog Hipster Runoff, whose author goes by the name Carles. Both men have since become mentors of a sort.

Zeva's first taste of Internet fame came as a T-shirt model for Hipster Runoff.

"I owe him my career," she said without irony of Carles, with whom she began a correspondence over MySpace, after her mother gave her blessing. The blog would go on to dub Zeva an "alternative it-girl."

But her growing Internet fame did not translate into popularity at school.

"I was rejected by the 'alternative crowd' at school, or so I assumed by their collective refusal to make eye contact with me, so I chose to become a neo-hippie instead," she wrote. "I wore ankle-length skirts, horizontal headbands, bundles of necklaces, and no shoes. I carried books by Abbie Hoffman as props."

In the summer of 2008, she switched to neon V-necks, colored tights, skinny jeans and metallic headbands. Life among the "lifers" soon brought on what Zeva terms "a severe case of depression," during which she "wore the same Sarah Lawrence hoodie with a pair of dark-wash Abercrombie & Fitch skinny jeans and Target moccasins" for months.

She made her final break from suburban conformity and the "lifers" by transferring to Virtual High School online. She created a profile on Lookbook.nu, a user-generated fashion photography site, which ? along with her blog, Fated to Be Hated (http://ftbh.blogspot.com), the title a reference to her unpopularity in high school and among some blog commenters who have accused her of betraying the hipster aesthetic to "go mainstream" ? brought her to the attention of magazines like Seventeen and Elle, and convinced Lin and Boyle that she might be a worthy subject for their documentary.

Zeva's and Lin's first contact came in October 2009, when Zeva, who had been reading and enjoying "Shoplifting From American Apparel," purchased an instant-message session with the novelist on eBay.

"What are your ambitions in life?" Lin asked during the exchange that followed.

"I think my ambitions involve 'proving a lot of people wrong' and being 'extremely relevant' and 'well known,' " Zeva wrote.

Fame remains central to Zeva's ambitions. She hopes to pursue a career in "fashion, journalism and sociology." In the fall, she will enroll for a semester at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but she hopes to transfer shortly to Pratt Institute, Parsons, the Fashion Institute of Technology or New York University.

"I'm leaving my heart here and coming back to retrieve it later," she said at Lodge.

After the meal, the diners were choosing between two parties to attend, one given by Alexander's musician friends in Bushwick and another at the offices of Verso Books, in Dumbo, to which Lin had been invited.

"Which party will have the more relevant people?" Zeva asked.

"Verso publishes Slavoj Zizek," Lin said.

Zeva is an admirer of the Slovenian philosopher. "Will he be there?" she asked.

"Probably not," Lin said.

The crowd hailed cabs and went to Bushwick. They finished the night at Alexander's apartment nearby.

On Sunday, the day of the premiere of "Bebe Zeva," Zeva was seated at Gimme! Coffee, on Lorimer Street in Brooklyn, where "Kids" by the group MGMT was playing over the speakers, to Zeva's displeasure.

"I would expect to hear this in the suburbs, but not in Brooklyn," she said.

From there she walked over the Williamsburg Bridge to Soho House in the meatpacking district.

On the way, she discussed the unavoidability of cliche in style.

"Nobody can help being a cliche," she said. "I started out as one cliche, preppy, and since then I've cycled through a series of other cliches. Now I'm trying to create a new cliche for the next generation to imitate."

She was dressed in a Cyber Goth outfit identical to the one she had been wearing Friday night. She caught her robe once on a traffic cone that was blocking off a pothole. At Papaya Dog, on Sixth Avenue in the West Village, she bought chicken wings to take to the premiere.

"Walking into the premiere eating wings is perfect for my personal brand," she said.

Cuban Blogger Voices Her Generation - Big Think

Yoani_s_nchez

What's the Latest Development?

From Havana,?Yoani Sanchez blogs about her?intimate?experiences as a Cuban on her website GenerationY. "'This country is so saturated with contaminated, corrupted political discourse, with empty pamphleteering, that I wanted to explore other areas,' Ms. Sanchez, 35, said last month in a telephone interview from Havana, interrupted several times when the connection broke down. 'I write about my interior life, the intimate sphere. It’s the sentiments of one person but sums up the reality of many people and shows just how sick this society is.'"

What's the Big Idea?

"Globally, Ms. Sanchez’s blog, whose name refers to the Russian-sounding names beginning with 'Y' that many Cubans her age were given at the height of their nation’s dependency on the Soviet Union, is available in a score of languages and gets up to 14 million visits a month. Within Cuba, though, the dictatorship of Fidel and Raul Castro has from the start sought to silence her and prevent other Cubans from reading what she calls her 'little vignettes of reality'. ...?The Castro dictatorship has responded to her challenge by doubling down."

Five Good Minutes: Wake Forest Football Preview With Blogger So Dear - BC Interruption

Maroonandgold_tiny by BCHysteria on Jul 8, 2011 11:00 AM EDT in Boston College Football

Part of an abbreviated Wake Forest preview week

As ?part of our Wake Forest preview, I sat down with Riley Johnston of the SBN Wake Forest blog?Bloggers So Dear?to find out more about this year's Demon Deacons football team.

BC Interruption:??Last year was a tough year for Wake Forest and their fans. Will this year be any different?

Bloggers So Dear:?Well let's put it this way: we sure as hell can't get much worse. We had a very, very young defense last year, particularly in the secondary. When you have youth and inexperience in such an important sector then it is not very surprising that you are going to give up a ton of yards and points. That is exactly what we did in many games. Both sides of the ball should be very much improved with another year under their belt. In terms of record it is really hard to say how we will do because of the difficult schedule we have next year. At home alone, Wake faces Notre Dame, FSU, Virginia Tech and N.C. State. I think we will improve by one or two games in the standings, but will be a much better team.

BCI:?Tanner Price and Chase Rettig were both freshman QB's in the ACC last season and put up eerily similar numbers. Who do you think will have a bigger 2011 season?

BSD:?Both of our QB's were really thrown into the fire without a lot of support last year. Boston College at least had a formidable defense to protect the quarterback with in terms of keeping the scoring low. Not to mention one of the best running backs in the country in Montel Harris, who could put up Heisman like numbers. I think that Tanner Price is going to be a great QB for us going forward (assuming he doesn't lose his starting spot to Kevin Sousa in a year), but next year he will likely see some more growing pains. It will help that our offensive line is bigger and better to protect him in the pocket, but that can only go so far. I have heard that Price is putting himself through some grueling workouts to get better, and if that is the case then it should pay off a good amount. I think that Rettig will be more of a game manager for BC, while Price will be called on a little more for Wake Forest. Since they are going to be asked to do different things it is hard to say who will have the "bigger" year, but I expect Price will have the better numbers, while Rettig manages games better.

BCI:??Boston College had the 109th ranked offense last year, and Wake Forest had the 110th ranked defense. Looking at this year's matchup, what force of mediocrity will prevail? Who do you have winning it?

BSD:?At this point I have very little idea what to expect for Wake Forest. BC is definitely a game that is in our "toss-up" category. I think it comes down to how well our rush defense is. If we are giving up 100 yards a game on the ground, then Harris is going to eat us alive. Hell he will probably tear us apart no matter what we do. If we can force Rettig to beat us and make the big passes when it matters then I think we have a fair chance. I don't know a lot about BC and how their defense is supposed to be, but I would take a guess and say that y'all have the advantage in that sector. At this point I will say that Boston College is probably the favorite by a touchdown or so, but I will revise that when we talk again before the game.

BCI:??Who will turn it around first -- Wake Forest basketball or football?

BSD:?I have to say Wake Forest football. Both programs are on the rise (they have to be haha), and after last year the fans are really impatient with the entire administration. Coach Grobe seems to have the parts in place to make another run at the upper echelon of the ACC in the next couple of years. We are recruiting a lot better, have some fantastic athletes on both sides of the ball, and our coaching staff knows what it takes to be competitive and put us in a place to win. In basketball nearly everything is a huge question mark. We were the worst team in the history of the ACC record wise last year. I think we will improve by 6-7 games next year (so 13-14 wins total), and maybe 4-5 wins in the ACC. That is certainly not good, but it is considerable improvement over the monstrosity of a season that was last year. A lot will depend on the recruiting class that we have coming in in 2012. If they prove to be game changers then we might be back in the NCAA in 3 years. I think we can make a bowl in football in 2 years, so I'm going with our football team.

BCI:??Last one. Wake Forest only managed one win in the ACC last year. What will Wake Forest fans consider a successful 2011 season?

BSD:?On the whole, most people want us to make a bowl game. I think that is a bit unrealistic given our schedule and really only 2-3 games that we "should win" (right now Gardner Webb, Duke, and Vanderbilt). There are a few tossup games too with Boston College, N.C. State, Maryland?and Syracuse, but there are also a lot of games that are probably unlikely wins: North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Notre Dame?and Clemson. If we can go 2-2 in those toss-up games, it would put us in a good position to steal one in the last group. That being said, if we beat Notre Dame then I think we would all be happy. Everybody is recognizing this as our best home slate ever at Groves Stadium, and the ticket sales reflect that. There should be some fantastic games this year and I am really looking forward to it. I guess the bottom line would be 6 wins to make people happy, but if we can steal a win or two against UNC, VT, FSU and Notre Dame, that would make a lot of people pretty happy.

You can read more about Wake Forest from Riley and the other talented guys at?Blogger So Dear. Make sure to follow?RJ on Twitter as well.?

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams on Blogger & blogging's future - GigaOm

jank0: By tis rate, I'm going to have more followers on Google Plus than on Twitter next week.

evanwilliams.jpgWhen the rumors of Google retiring the Picasa and Blogger brands hit the web last week, it sent me down memory lane. It made me think about blogging in general and how it had evolved. I wanted to write an Om Says newsletter (and I am working on it) and pinged Evan Williams, co-founder of Twitter, and before that, the creator of Blogger, the service that was bought by Google in 2003.

With Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and countless other options, blogging isn’t quite what it used to be.?I wanted to know what he thought about the name change (to Google Blogs) and what exactly is the future of blogging. Williams replied to me and I am sharing with you the excerpts of an email he sent me.

I’m guessing if you talked to folks at Blogger or WordPress (see disclosure), they’d say the numbers are bigger than ever, which makes it a difficult case to say classic blogging is gone.I think what’s changed is that “blogging as we knew it” is no longer the easiest way to express oneself online, so it is not the choice for the most casual users.

You have to be a bit more dedicated to blog than to tweet or post on [Facebook] now and then. Maybe that means the active blogging user base is only tens of millions of people, globally, instead of hundreds of millions for these other services.

Regarding the rumored Blogger name change: It’s kinda sad for me and those involved with Blogger, but I can see the argument why it makes sense for Google. The good news is, whatever the name, Blogger is getting better and is not going way.

The saddest part is that the Blogger [b] logo, created by Derek Powazek (later refreshed by Doug Bowman) is one of the best web logos of all time. Hopefully they won’t get rid of that. :)

Williams, who recently joined up with Biz Stone and Josh Goldman to start Obvious Corp, is sad about Blogger, and so are many others. I was an early adopter of the service and then a pro subscriber. It was like Dave Winer’s pioneering Userland product, and a key part of my blogging journey, something I outline in this post, How Ev, Dave, The Trotts & Matt changed my life.

More on that later, but in the interim enjoy these articles from the archives:?
