A backlash erupted, quite rightly, against Lowe’s big box stores after the retailer pulled ads on the TLC reality show “All-American Muslim.” Lowe’s Home Improvement pulled the spots after a conservative group, the Florida Family Association, claimed the program was “propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.”
Did they even see the show or did they launch the ad campaign after reading the title?
Turns out Lowe’s wasn’t the only retailer to yanks ads from TLC due to the show, but it generated the most chatter. Now Lowe’s has issued a middling half-apology, pardoning itself if it did anything that might have annoyed you…
Of course the Florida group’s small-minded complaint only confirms the premise of the TLC show: that anti-Muslim bigotry is alive and well and busy obscuring the facts.
The eight-part series aimed to examine the lives of five American Muslim families in Dearborn, Mich., a community “struggling to balance faith and nationality in a post- 9/11 world.”
