The United Filipino Organization is spearheading a fundraising drive to benefit the victims of Typhoon Sendong, which ravaged the southern Philippines, claiming at least 1,002 lives, with hundreds more missing and leaving behind destroyed villages and infrastructures only days before Christmas.
Bong Malasarte, president of the umbrella organization of some 30 Filipino groups in the CNMI, said the aftermath of one of the deadliest disasters to hit Mindanao is so heartrending that UFO officers and members felt compelled to do something to respond to the needs of thousands of affected families.
“Filipinos are known for their spirit of bayanihan or helping their fellow countrymen in times of need. It is during this time when we should extend whatever help we can to help the calamity survivors and make them feel that we care even though we're miles away,” he told Saipan Tribune.
Malasarte said the group decided to just solicit monetary donations since shipment of in-kind contributions would be challenging and costly.
“At this point, I think monetary donations are what they need, given that many businesses and individuals back in the Philippines are already taking care of the basic needs of the victims,” he said.
Malasarte said there will be several locations where they will accept monetary donations.
Drop-off points and schedules are as follows: Dec. 22 at the Garapan Street Market at Paseo de Marianas from 6pm to 8pm; Dec. 23, Filcom Pavilion in Susupe from 5pm to 8pm; Dec. 24, Sabalu Market in Susupe from 8am to noon; Christmas Day or Dec. 25, Filcom Pavilion from 8am to 4pm.
Malasarte noted that there is no minimum amount required when donating to the cause. “Any amount, no matter how small, will definitely help. It would go a long way,” he said.
Proceeds of the fund drive will be given to the Philippine Red Cross. Malasarte said they are now trying to communicate with the emergency response organization. If that doesn't work out, Malasarte said they plan to deposit the donation in the ABS-CBN Foundation's Sagip Kapamilya account.
“For now, our utmost concern is to be able to raise the funds, all of which will be accounted for by UFO volunteers,” he said.
Malasarte added that they plan to turn over the collected donation right after Christmas so that the victims can benefit from it right away.
He urged the public, particularly the Filipino community in the CNMI, to donate and help provide aid to all the survivors in this season of giving. “I know times are hard for us but we are still fortunate that we did not suffer the same fate. Christmas is a time of giving and sharing and so I encourage everyone to help the victims of Typhoon Sendong.”
