If you missed Maserati’s take on what an SUV should look like at the Frankfurt Auto Show, you’ll have another chance to see it when the Maserati Kubang concept makes its North American debut at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. The Kubang concept, unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, gets a dose of Italian styling to set it apart from the SUV herd. (Photo: Motor Authority) The Detroit Free Press confirms that the Kubang will be on display at the show, even though Maserati spokesman Jeffrey Ehoodin declined to name the concept SUV that Maserati would exhibit in Detroit. Unless Maserati is really good at keeping secrets, we seriously doubt it has two SUVs currently under development, though a name change might be in order.
The Kubang, rumored to be headed for production in 2013, will share a platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango, but it will be powered by Maserati-designed engines built by Ferrari in Maranello, Italy. According to Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, final assembly of the vehicle would take place in Detroit.
Maserati will be holding a press conference within the Fiat-Chrysler stand during the Detroit Auto Show, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it was to announce that production of the Maserati Kubang has been given a green light.
Whether you love the idea of a performance-based SUV or hate it, there’s no denying that the best-selling vehicle in Porsche’s lineup is the Cayenne SUV. There’s clearly a market, and Maserati would like to tap into it.
