Golden Globes: sorting the TV nominees

Executive producer Ryan Murphy, left, and actor Matthew Morrison picking up the 2010 award for 'Glee,' which is nominated again this year.

First reactions to this morning’s Golden Globes nominee announcement: So glad to see Madeline Stowe on the list of nominees for best actress, and “Homeland” getting three nods including Claire Danes and Damian Lewis as best actors. They almost make up for the lack of love for “Justified” and the knee-jerk nomination of “Glee.”

Jessica Lange and Maggie Smith head to head as best supporting actresses on TV! Hurray for “Episodes” in the comedy category (may bring some attention to an under-watched show), but in drama, the “American Horror Story” scarefest, really?

And while I never miss an episode of “Glee,” it is so uneven as to be a poor choice for best comedy. (Is it a comedy in the first place? The genre defying scope of the musical dramedy is one of its best features.)

The Globes aren’t taken too seriously, except as barometers of how the Emmys might go. In which case, cable still rules.
