Rapids’ coaching search includes four candidate interviews so far to replace Gary Smith

The Colorado Rapids’ search for a new head coach continues to churn, as the club interviewed its fourth candidate at team headquarters today in Commerce City, according to a team official.

Colorado Rapids fans wave a Colorado state flag following Brian Mullan's goal against Santos Laguna during the Rapids' 4-1 CONCACAF Champions League loss at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on September 13, 2011.

Dave Lindholm, director of media relations for the Rapids, said the process to find Gary Smith’s replacement began with phone interviews and has advanced now to in-person meetings. Smith was let go on Nov. 7 when Rapids’ managing director Jeff Plush decided not to renew Smith’s contract.

“We cast a wide net,” Lindholm said of the coaching search, adding that the club received resumes from coaches around the globe.

The four candidates who have visited the team complex so far to interview have one thing in common: They all have MLS coaching experience, either as a head or assistant coach, Lindholm said. The club declined to comment specifically on who the candidates are.

Although there is no direct timeline, the Rapids hope to have a coach in place as soon as they can, possibly within the next two weeks.
