Winter X Games gets a new medal for Aspen return, designed by fans

Joe Hodnicki's winning design for the 2012 Winter X Games medal.

The Winter X Games isn’t one for tradition. The games were born of a rebellious attitude from the start.

So it’s no surprise they’re changing medals. ESPN, the Games’ television partner, recently asked fans to design the X Games award that will hang around the necks of winners.

Online voters then chose their favorite among 16 finalists. The winning design, created by Joe Hodnicki, has skis, a snowboard and a snowmobile crossing to form an X.

“The athletes and the fans are what make the X Games,” games director Shawn Seward said. “So this year we (put the medal)… in the hands of the fans.”

The 2012 games return to Aspen Jan 26-29 when the medals debut as a new tradition ? until next year.
